Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these drugs should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
