Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
